Hearing on comprehensive plan
The Laurel Planning and Zoning Commission will conduct a public hearing on Laurel's draft comprehensive plan beginning at 7 p.n. Wednesday, August 9. The hearing will be held on the second floor of Town Hall. The town Mayor and Council, commission members, and state agencies have made comments on the plan, which is a 10-year growth strategy for Laurel. The original draft is available here. DDD workshop – Save the date
The Town of Laurel is hosting a workshop for property owners within the town's Downtown Development District. The workshop will be on Tuesday, September 26 at the Laurel Public Library. The workshop will include information on state DDD grants, the state historic tax credit, financing options, energy efficiency rebates, facade improvements for businesses, and other relevant information. This year's second annual Rock the Block will happen on Wednesday, September 27 from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Rock the Block is made possible by the $70,000 grant from Lowes supporting the Laurel neighborhood revitalization initiative that also includes home rehabilitation, financial empowerment workshops, and community clean-up days. Construction volunteer activities will be focused within a one mile radius around Laurel's Old Town neighborhoods, with participants from 30 Lowes Heroes from the local Lowe's stores on this day. Plant 300 trees
The Nanticoke Watershed Alliance, along with DNREC and the LRC, are planting 300 trees and shrubs to help keep our waterways clean and healthy. Volunteer for a few hours to help beautify Laurel and give back to the environment. The event will be 9 to noon Saturday, October 7 in Janosik Park. Rain date is Saturday, October 21. Bring a shovel and gloves, although we will provide some.

The dedication and sale of two fully rehabilitated Sussex County Habitat for Humanity homes will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, February 21. The public is invited to gather at the corner of Market and Oak streets. Christmas on Broad Creek
Christmas Markets come to Broad Creek in Laurel on Friday, December 7. In conjunction with this year’s Laurel Christmas Parade “A Christmas Village”, the newly formed Laurel Parks and Recreation will host a Christmas Village Market on Front Street along Broad Creek between Delaware and Central Avenue. The Laurel Redevelopment Corporation's annual meeting and dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m Tuesday, December 11, at Abbott's on Broad Creek. Bike and Brew
The annual Broad Creek Bike and Brew showcases the Town of Laurel and the surrounding countryside, including Trap Pond State Park and the Woodland Ferry. The mass start is 9 a.m. Saturday, June 1. The ride begins at North Laurel Elementary School, 300 Wilson St. Routes range from 15 miles to a full century, 100 miles. Check the official website for more detailed information and to register.
